GSWA is using a customer database from Guam Waterworks Authority to find households that currently don’t have trash service. Solid Waste General Manager Irvin Slike said there are about 43,000 households getting water service, but only 21,000 have residential trash service.

As Guam moves closer to islandwide trash collection, officials discuss options for collecting money under the mandatory system.

The waste transfer station opened in 1984, and through the years served as a typhoon debris staging area, and a site for hazardous household waste, garbage, tires and private recycling operations

One of the first things the agency must do is purchase trash and recycling carts for about 21,000 new customers.

The new law is expected to reduce illegal dumping and decrease garbage collection rates.
