Typhoon Champi is expected to have sustained winds of 150 mph when it passes south of Guam Sunday morning.

Typhoon Champi has rapidly intensified and is now a Category 4 typhoon, expected to pass just south of Guam between 4 and 5 a.m. Sunday with 150 mph winds.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center said Champi currently has winds of 130 miles and gusts to 161 mph. It is continuing in a period of rapid intensification.

As of 4 p.m., Champi was located near 12.5 degrees north latitude and 147.3 degrees east longitude. It was heading to the west-northwest at 15 mph.

Guam has been in Condition of Readiness 1 since 1 p.m. Emergency officials urged residents to stay inside a sturdy, concrete-reinforced structure until COR 4 is announced.

Do not go outside during the storm, even if conditions temporarily appear calm.

Residents in coastal and flood-prone areas should evacuate to safe shelter. Life-threatening coastal flooding is expected.

Rain and winds will deteriorate significantly overnight Saturday. Dangerous, potentially life-threatening conditions may develop rapidly once winds arrive.
