Typhoon Bavi’s path has shifted slightly to the south as the storm remains on track to slam the Mariana Islands on Sunday night and Monday morning as a Category 4 or 5 storm.

The National Weather Service will issue a typhoon watch for Rota, Tinian and Saipan at 2 p.m. Friday, according to CNMI officials.

“Model trends are suggesting a more southerly shift closer to Rota and Guam, however, it remains too soon to rule out any island from direct impacts as forecast tracks can and will change,” according to a National Weather Service Statement issued just before noon Friday.

The weather service said residents should “prepare for the potential of significant coastal inundation with a strong typhoon passage through the Marianas. Surf may begin to exceed 20 feet as Bavi arrives, with inundation heights potentially exceeding 7 feet over wider reefs.”

Guam is scheduled to go into Condition of Readiness 3 at 3 p.m. today, and COR 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday.
