A measure in the CNMI Senate would rename Saipan’s Guma’ Hustisia, Iimwal Aweewe, House of Justice in honor of former Mayor Elias Parong Sablan.
Senate Bill 24‑45, sponsored by Tinian Sen. Jude U. Hofschneider, cites Sablan’s decades of public service, including three terms as Saipan mayor from 1944 to 1957, his work as a translator for U.S. forces after World War II, and his role in persuading the military to reopen lands at Camp Susupe so residents could return to their homes and farms.
The bill also highlights Sablan’s service as senior administrative adviser under the U.S. Naval Administration, his later work as a judge of the Community Court, and his leadership at the Department of Land Management.
Fluent in six languages, Sablan was regarded as a bridge between cultures and reported on Saipan’s postwar recovery to the United Nations. He is remembered as a respected leader who helped restore civic life in the Marianas.
If enacted, the building would be officially designated the Elias Parong Sablan Guma’ Hustisia, Iimwal Aweewe, House of Justice.
