Compensation for Department of Corrections officers will be the topic of a hearing at the legislature this afternoon.
Bill 140-38 states that “correctional officers routinely work under hazardous conditions, often faced with chronic understaffing, overcrowding, and lack of immediate backup that contribute to elevated risks of assault, psychological strain, and occupational burnout — beyond what is experienced in other law enforcement settings.”
The bill, introduced by Sen. Chris
Barnett, would require the Department of Administration to conduct salary, recruitment and retention studies for the Department of Corrections at least once every three years.
The first study would take place within three months of the legislation’s enactment.
