Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero signed a bill into law Thursday allowing the construction of a solar farm on the site of the Guam International Country Club in Dededo.
The bill amends the lease between the golf club and the CHamoru Land Trust Commission to accelerate rent payments and add the generation of solar power as a permitted use of the property.
The solar farm will generate between 60 and 65 megawatts, or enough electricity to power 45,000 homes. It will also reduce water and chemical use from the former golf course.
In her remarks, the governor said the bill provides clear financial benefits for the people of Guam, with the profit-sharing agreement expected to net $47 million for the CLTC over 30 years.
Guam has committed to having 50% renewable energy 10 years from now and 100% renewable energy 20 years from now.
