The 39th Guam Legislature will bring new faces, as well as some returning senators, into Guam’s lawmaking body.

A number of senators in the 38th Guam Legislature gave up their seats to run for higher office. Republican Speaker Frank Blas Jr., Republican Vice Speaker Tony Ada and Democratic Sens. Therese Terlaje and Joe San Agustin all ran for governor, with Ada winning the island’s highest office.

Democratic Sens. Sabina Perez and Tina Muna Barnes ran for lieutenant governor.

That left nine incumbents, all of whom won reelection.

They are Republicans Sabrina Salas Matanane, Jesse Lujan, Chris Duenas, Shelly Calvo, Telo Taitague, Vincent Borja and Eulogio Shawn Gumatatao. Democratic incumbents reelected were Chris Barnett and William Parkinson.

Former Democratic Sens. Amanda Shelton, Telena Nelson and Clynton Ridgell were elected Tuesday, along with Democratic legislative newcomers Donna Quinata and Kallen Perez.

Hoa Nyugen is the Republican newcomer, giving the party an 8-7 majority in the 39th Legislature.
