If the power just came on and you are wondering if that jar of mayonnaise in your refrigerator is still good, the Division of Environmental Health of the Department of Public Health and Social Services has some advice for you.
Throw out perishable food like meat, fish, eggs and milk in your refrigerator when the power has been off for four hours or more.
Thawed frozen food that still contains ice crystals can be refrozen or cooked immediately.
Throw out foods and containers that may have had contact with flood or storm water. Also discard food with unusual odor, color, or texture and food in cans that are bulging, open, or dented.
Throw away any wooden cutting boards, baby bottle nipples and pacifiers that have come in contact with storm or flood water.
Remember, when in doubt, throw it out.
