Tropical Storm Champi’s path has shifted to the south, with the current forecast track taking the storm directly over Guam.

However, forecasters caution that the track could still shift.

Champi is expected to intensify, likely becoming a Category 2 typhoon with winds over 100 mph when it passes through the Marianas this weekend.

As of 4 a.m. Friday, Champi was located at 11.6 degrees north latitude and 156.5 degrees east longitude, or about 800 miles east of Guam. The storm had winds of 40 mph, and it was headed west at 12 mph.

Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan are under a typhoon watch and a flood watch. Forecasters say damaging winds are likely late Saturday night and Sunday.

Residents are advised to pick up loose debris on their property, restock their emergency kits and gather any medications or other essentials in preparation for power outages.
