Forecasters say Guam and the Northern Marianas should prepare for a tropical storm or low-end typhoon over the weekend as Tropical Depression 29W continues to organize and strengthen.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center indicates the storm will pass between Guam and Rota overnight Saturday and into Sunday.

Patrick Bowsher of the National Weather Service says the storm is still far enough out that there is some uncertainty about its track and intensity.

Bowsher said the system could pass anywhere from the south of Guam to the north of Saipan.

He said it is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Friday and possibly reach typhoon strength by the weekend.

Residents are advised to prepare for strong winds, heavy rains and power outages.
