A disturbance, 96W, is expected to intensify and head toward the Marianas this weekend.

Forecasters are looking at the potential passage of a tropical storm or typhoon this weekend anywhere from south of Guam to the Northern Islands.

While the exact timing, location and intensity of the storm are uncertain, emergency managers are advising residents of Guam and the Northern Marianas to begin making early preparations.

On Tuesday, Invest 96W was 200 miles west of Kosrae and about 1,300 miles east-southeast of Guam. It was expected to move west-northwest and could pass near the islands Saturday and into Sunday.

National Weather Service Guam says the system could reach at least tropical storm strength and possibly typhoon strength.

No watches or warnings are in effect yet, but heavy rain, gusty winds and hazardous seas are possible.

Residents can prepare by cleaning their storm drains, trimming overgrown vegetation and calling authorities about overgrown vegetation near power and utility lines.

Households should also check and restock emergency kits with at least seven days of drinking water, non-perishable food, medications and supplies.
