Guam residents and businesses affected by Super Typhoon Bavi in July will be able to apply for federal assistance after President Donald Trump approved a major disaster declaration for the island last week.

The governor’s office announced that both individual assistance and public assistance have been approved.

According to FEMA, assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster.

Public assistance covers emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities carried out by the local government.

FEMA says individuals and families who sustained losses in the designated areas should first file claims with their insurance providers and then apply for assistance online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling the local, toll-free line 671-735-1050, calling the FEMA Helpline 1-800-621-3362 or by using the FEMA App.
