One of the port’s three cranes damaged by high winds Friday night has been repaired and placed back into service Monday afternoon.
The Port Authority of Guam said Gantry Crane 4 is operational and was used Monday to load 10 refrigerated containers onto a Matson barge bound for Saipan. It will also be used to unload a ship arriving Tuesday.
Gantry Crane 5 has been returned to the rail system but will require repairs, inspection and recertification before returning to service. Crews are working to return Gantry Crane 6 to the rail system.
The port is also trying to rent a mobile crane to help with vessel operations.
Friday night’s incident occurred when Gantry Crane 6 became dislodged from its secured position and traveled approximately 1,000 feet along the crane rail system before hitting Gantry Cranes 5 and 4. No injuries were reported, but all three cranes were damaged.
Gantry Crane 6 had been locked in position and secured at the time.
The Port Authority said gauges on the crane recorded winds of about 100 mph during the incident. The Port has not characterized the incident as either a procedural failure or mechanical malfunction as the technical assessment remains ongoing.
The assessments will help determine what effect, if any, Friday night’s incident has had on the remaining service lives of Gantries 5 and 6.
