Guam Memorial Hospital is dealing with a surge of patients that is stretching resources at the facility, according to a news release from the hospital.
The hospital has 161 licensed acute care beds. On Thursday, its two medical-surgical units had just one unoccupied space between them, while 21 patients were listed as Emergency Department holdings.
The hospital noted that increases in demand can occur during flu season, and seasonal illness may be contributing to the current surge.
Interim Administrator Dr. Joleen Aguon said the surge is placing significant demands on the hospital. Some patients are receiving care in ER hallway spaces while awaiting inpatient placement.
“Our teams are using available resources to make room and continue caring for patients. We understand how worrying a prolonged wait is for families, and we are working across the hospital to move patients into appropriate rooms,” Aguon said.
Assistant Administrator for Nursing Administration Christine Tuquero said nursing teams are coordinating patient placements and addressing care and comfort needs while patients wait.
“During flu season, respiratory illnesses can lead to serious complications and add to the number of people needing hospital care,” Tuquero said. “We encourage everyone eligible to get their seasonal flu shot to help protect against severe illness.”
