The Triton’s Call, the University of Guam’s (UOG) student-run newspaper, is representing UOG at the 27th International Symposium on Journalism (ISOJ) from Sept. 17 to 18.
Editor-in-Chief Sophie Forsyth and Managing Editor Mikaela Rae Atoigue will attend the conference, hosted by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas in Austin.
Atoigue says the conference is an off-island opportunity that gives student journalists a chance to gain experience and connect with professionals in the industry.
“Thanks to grant funding from Press Forward, ISOJ will expose our staff to major media professionals from organizations like The New York Times, POLITICO, Axios, and the Texas Tribune,” said Atoigue.
ISOJ is recognized worldwide as a premier conference bridging the gap between journalism academia and the news industry. This year’s high-profile program centers on two of the industry’s most critical transformations: rebuilding audience trust in an era of shifting democracies and navigating the future of reporting amid the rise of artificial intelligence.
Forsyth says despite being a small student newspaper, The Triton’s Call always aims to center student and community voices.
“Being able to represent the University of Guam and The Triton’s Call feels surreal,” Forsyth said. “With AI being a hot topic nowadays, being able to listen to the speakers at the international symposium on journalism and how AI might fit within the media, or even id there should be a place for it, is what I’m really looking forward to discussing with fellow journalists.”
The line-up for this year’s ISOJ program includes journalism and industry professionals, including Zach Seward, editorial director of A.I. initiatives at The New York Times, Elizabeth Green, CEO and founder of the Civic News Company, Jonathan Greenberger, Global Editor-in-Chief of POLITICO, and more.
The Triton’s Call is the official student-run campus newspaper of UOG. It is dedicated to fostering independent student voices, ethical reporting, and engagement with the local community.
