Tiyan High School’s sanitary permit remains suspended following a follow-up inspection, according to the Department of Public Health and Social Services.
The Division of Environmental Health conducted the inspection Sept. 10 after Guam’s Department of Education requested a reinspection to determine whether previously cited violations had been corrected.
The campus houses students from Tiyan and Simon Sanchez high schools.Inspectors found several violations that were cited during an Aug. 12 inspection had been corrected, including issues involving floors, temperature and humidity, lighting, drinking fountains, handwashing sinks, and shower rooms.
However, other violations remain. Inspectors found ceilings that were not clean and in good repair in the first-floor hallway of Building C, four exit doors that were not self-closing, and odors in boys’ restrooms in Buildings B and K. Public Health also identified additional violations that were not cited during the August inspection. These include a damaged fire extinguisher casing on the second floor of Building K and odors in the boys’ and girls’ restrooms in Building E.
The inspection also found that Tiyan High School had closed off and posted signs around several areas, including the amphitheater, pavilion, outdoor basketball and volleyball courts, Building F, Building G, the second floors of Buildings A through E, and the front-side arena of Building H. Public Health said those areas cannot be used until inspectors clear them.
The sanitary permit will remain suspended until the school corrects the violations and completes the inspections required by Public Health to verify compliance.
The Department of Education said it is working with Public Health to address the outstanding items so that the permit can be reinstated as soon as possible.
In the meantime, instruction will continue through hard copy packets and online learning for the rest of the week, and Grab & Go services will continue for the rest of the week.
