Guam senators were briefly in special session Tuesday to discuss the governor’s plan to allocate almost $20 million to Guam Memorial Hospital and the University of Guam, but the lawmakers decided to schedule a hearing on the bill for next week.
Sen. Chris Duenas said there are three other bills with hearings set for next week that also involve plans for the same $19,885,394, which is excess Section 30 money from the federal government.
Section 30 funds are money collected by the federal government in taxes and fees that are returned to the government of Guam each year. The bulk of the money comes from income taxes paid by military and federal workers stationed on Guam.
One of those bills would use the money to provide $100 in monthly power credits to Guam Power Authority customers. Another would give the money to the Guam Department of Education, and the third would use the money for Simon Sanchez High School.
Those bills are scheduled for a hearing at 2 p.m. Monday, with the governor’s bill set for a Tuesday hearing.
