Breaking Wave Theatre Company is celebrating the first anniversary of its Mongmong-Toto-Maite headquarters this month by offering a new season of creative opportunities Guam residents.
The group is presenting LI’E: A Gathering of Local Creativity, an evening celebrating photography, music, jewelry, and community from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at the headquarters in the MTM Building. Admission is by donation.
The group is also providing free and low-cost workshops and community guilds as part of its expansion from a theatre company to a community arts hub.
Rising Tides Storytelling Studio is offered twice monthly on Saturdays for elementary and middle school students, and Wednesday afternoons for high school students. The Storytelling Studio gives young people the chance to explore storytelling, voice, and expression. It is led by BWTC Artistic Director and Director of Youth Programming Joyce Torres.
“Working with our youth this summer, we got to watch them really come alive in this space. We watched them try things, take risks, find their voices, and blossom, and honestly, we couldn’t wait a whole year to come back to that magic,” Torres said.
Community Guilds include the Play Readers Guild, BWTChoir, and the Golden Hilitai Guild, a tabletop roleplaying game adventure that meets twice monthly for one-shot adventures. Together, the guilds create welcoming, low-pressure spaces where community members can connect through storytelling, music, theatre, and collaborative play.
