The Guam Department of Agriculture’s Forestry and Soil Resources Division, in partnership with LOVE Guam, will host a community tree-planting event Saturday at the As Gadao Plantation in Malesso’.
The event is part of a landscape-scale restoration effort within the Manell Geus watershed. Volunteers will plant native tree species including ifit, niyoron, panao, talisai and nanasu.
According to the Department of Agriculture, the trees will help create natural barriers against invasive species and soil runoff while supporting the restoration of Guam’s native ecosystem.
“Every tree we plant at As Gadao is an investment in Guam’s future,” Department of Agriculture acting Director Glenn Takai stated in a news release. “This partnership with LOVE Guam reflects exactly the kind of community-driven stewardship our island needs.” Takai said the department’s forestry team is working to restore watersheds, protect native ecosystems, and build resilience against invasive species. DOAG Forestry and Soil Resources Division Chief Christine Fejeran said the planting site is significant because of its location within the Manell Geus watershed.
