While rescuers on Guam continue to search for a 28-year-old swimmer who went missing Sunday, the Coast Guard has suspended the search for a missing vessel with nine people aboard in the Hall Islands in the Federated States of Micronesia.
The Guam Fire Department, the Coast Guard and the Guam Police Department are looking for Nico Camacho, who was last seen swimming at Gun Beach in Tumon on Sunday afternoon.
Rough water and limited visibility were complicating search efforts.
In the Federated States of Micronesia, the Coast Guard began looking for a 20-foot skiff on July 31.
The boat was expected to return to Ruo island about 62 miles north of Chuuk Lagoon, but the vessel was reported overdue.
The Coast Guard launched a 10-day search that covered approximately 25,000 square nautical miles and more than 31 search patterns.
“We have made the difficult decision to suspend our active search,” Lt. Adeeb Ahmad, search and rescue mission coordinator, Coast Guard Forces Micronesia / Sector Guam, stated in a news release. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the missing during this challenging time. We are also extremely grateful to the international and U.S. military partners who worked tirelessly alongside us."
The search involved the Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Sub-Center on Guam, the USCG Cutter Vincent Danz, military aircraft from Hawaii, Guam and Japan and a ship from Pohnpei.
Two commercial vessels also joined the search.
