The National Weather Service has issued an extreme wind warning for the island of Rota.
At 4:33 a.m., Doppler radar indicated catastrophic winds associated with Super Typhoon Bavi approaching from the east are imminent over the entire island of Rota.
The weather service said the situation is extremely dangerous and life-threatening. Venturing outside can result in death from flying projectiles. Unreinforced structures will be destroyed. Utility poles and power lines will be down.
Widespread destructive winds in excess of 150 mph are expected.
Rota residents are advised to move to interior rooms of shelters and to stay away from windows.
“Get under a table or other piece of sturdy furniture,” the warning stated. “Use mattresses, blankets or pillows to cover your head and body. Remain in place through the passage of these life-threatening conditions.”
During a Facebook Live session earlier Monday morning, National Weather Service Meteorologist Landon Aydlett warned that even windows covered by shutters could be punctured by flying debris.
