The Rota Mayor’s Office sustained major damage Monday morning as Super Typhoon Bavi’s Category 5 eyewall passed directly over the island, delivering 180 mph sustained winds and gusts up to 215 mph, according to Mayor Aubrey Hocog.

“Yes, major damages,” Hocog said. “The expanded offices are destroyed.”

She said the central office—used as the island’s emergency command center—remained standing but “sustained flooding.”

A video shared by Hocog shows the building’s roof being battered by violent winds, appearing close to tearing away as debris whipped across the property.

Bavi’s eyewall crossed Rota late Monday morning while the storm continued moving west-northwest at 12 mph. Forecasters said the typhoon’s extreme wind intensity was expected to hold through Tuesday.
