Saipan will host a two‑day Liberation Day celebration this Friday and Saturday, centered on this year’s theme, “Together We Rise, Together We Stand.” The event marks the 80th anniversary of Saipan’s liberation, the 250th anniversary of the United States, and the 50th year of the Covenant.
The CNMI commemorates Liberation Day in July 1946, when civilians were freed from Camp Susupe.
Mayor Ramon “RB” Camacho said the community pushed strongly for the celebration.
“It’s not just to celebrate this 80th liberation, but to bring the people together,” he said. “We all suffer from the typhoon… this is about bringing the community together.”
Festivities begin at noon Friday at the Civic Center grounds in Susupe, with an opening ceremony at 4 p.m.
Saturday’s parade starts at 10 a.m. along Beach Road, followed by concessions through 11 p.m. Fireworks are planned for the evening.
More than 30 parade entries have registered, and all vendor and parade fees have been waived. Officials say the celebration offers residents a moment of relief and connection as recovery continues.
