Guam senators will hold an oversight hearing on the Department of Education this morning, followed by a hearing this afternoon on a bill that would change the composition of the Board of Education.
The agenda for the oversight hearing includes a discussion on school closures and consolidations, although Education Board members announced last week that no closures would take place during the 2026-27 school year.
Senators will also hear about the reopening plan for the upcoming school year and the transition plan between the previous and current superintendents.
The afternoon hearing will focus on Bill 286-38, which would replace the elected Board of Education with an appointed board. The number of voting members would be reduced from nine to seven.
The bill states that the proposed composition of the board – with members chosen from parents, business people, the general public and retired teachers and administrators - would improve public confidence and better represent the community.
