The CNMI Department of Labor is warning businesses across the Commonwealth to comply with hiring and wage laws, emphasizing that employing unauthorized workers and failing to pay wages in full remain serious violations.
In a statement released Wednesday, the agency’s Division of Enforcement and Compliance said employers must ensure that all workers are legally authorized to work in the CNMI and are paid for every hour worked.
“Hiring unauthorized workers is a violation of local labor law,” the department stated, adding that businesses found in noncompliance may face a Notice of Violation and possible enforcement action.
Division of Enforcement and Compliance Director Jose P. Kiyoshi urged employers to verify the work eligibility of employees as part of their responsibility under local labor regulations.
“We ask all employers to do their due diligence — know who you are hiring and make sure your workers are paid for every hour they put in,” Kiyoshi said. “This is not just the law. It is the right thing to do.”
The department also reiterated that failing to compensate workers for all hours rendered constitutes a labor violation and will be treated accordingly under existing laws and employment agreements.
Labor officials said the division continues to conduct workplace inspections and respond to complaints throughout the Commonwealth as part of ongoing enforcement efforts.
Employers seeking guidance or compliance assistance are encouraged to contact the CNMI Department of Labor.
