The Memorial Day commemoration usually held at Asan Beach will be moved to the Asan Bay overlook. The commemoration will begin at 6:30 p.m. May 23, 2026.

The traditional Memorial Day flag display won’t be installed at War in the Pacific National Historical Park in Asan this year, but volunteers are needed to help with a commemoration event at the Asan overlook.

Usually, the beach where American forces landed in Asan in 1944 is decorated with Guam and American flags to remember those lost in the fighting.

But Asan Beach sustained significant damage during Super Typhoon Sinlaku in April, and recovery efforts are ongoing.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, luminaria will light up the memorial wall and surrounding grounds at the Asan Bay Overlook, a site dedicated to remembering those who died or suffered during World War II on Guam.

Community members will also have opportunities throughout May to volunteer with the park to help prepare the memorial display and assist with cleanup efforts at Asan Beach.

Those interested in volunteering may email WAPA_Interpretation@nps.gov or call the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center at 671-333-4055.
