Residents line up at the entrance of the Survivor Recovery Center during its opening Wednesday at the Susupe Multipurpose Center in Saipan.

Residents seeking federal disaster assistance now have a central place to go, following Wednesday’s opening of the Survivor Recovery Center at the Susupe Multipurpose Center.

The center brings FEMA, the U.S. Small Business Administration, and the American Red Cross under one roof as the CNMI continues recovering from Typhoon Sinlaku, which caused widespread power and water outages across the islands in mid‑April.

Gov. David M. Apatang said the center marks a major step in helping families begin long‑term recovery.

“Take advantage of this program… Don’t wait until the last minute,” he told residents.

FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Andrew Grant said more than 5,000 people have already registered for assistance. “We’re here to help everyone in need,” he said, adding that the center provides direct, in‑person access to support.

Governor’s Authorized Representative Patrick Guerrero said the center was opened faster than in previous disasters.

“This is maybe three weeks since the disaster, and it’s the quickest I’ve seen a Survivor Recovery Center put up,” he said. More than 100 people had visited by mid‑morning on opening day.

Guerrero also said Tinian and Rota will have their own recovery centers. The Tinian Youth Center is being prepared now, and planning is underway with the Rota mayor’s office to open a site there.
