The voyaging canoe Alingano Maisu has changed course and is now heading toward Palau as multiple weather systems move through the western Pacific.

According to an update from the crew, Tropical Storm Hagupit is currently passing through Yap, causing winds to shift direction once again. Another disturbance is also being monitored near Kosrae.

To avoid the severe weather, Capt. Sesario Sewralur altered the canoe’s course away from Yap and toward Palau.

Crew members report they are doing well and have ample supplies on board. If current wind conditions persist, the captain anticipates reaching Palau by Sunday.

The Alingano Maisu departed Palau earlier this year as part of a traditional voyage expedition across the Pacific focused on cultural exchange, traditional navigation, and environmental awareness.
