The voyaging canoe Alingano Maisu is redirecting its course and won’t visit Guam as originally planned.
A disturbance near Kosrae is being monitored. It has a 20% chance of development between May 13 and 19. Navigators say the voyage to Guam would have been extended by at least two weeks.
Due to shifting wind conditions, a potential weather disturbance in the western Pacific, and limited resources, the crew says it cannot safely continue to Guam at this time.
As of Monday morning, the canoe was about 450 miles from Yap. The crew will decide by Wednesday, whether to divert to Yap or return directly to Palau. If they voyage to Yap, their possible arrival is between May 10 and 12.
The next update is expected on Wednesday.
The Alingano Maisu departed Palau in February as part of a months-long, 6,200-mile voyage led by Grandmaster Navigator Sesario Sewralur, promoting traditional navigation, cultural exchange, and environmental awareness across the Pacific.
