Workers on Rota clear debris from the roadway following the passage of Typhoon Sinlaku.

Although Typhoon Sinlaku was 270 miles north of Saipan at 4 a.m. today, the islands of Saipan and Tinian remained in Typhoon Condition 1.

Sustained winds of 45 to 60 mph were continuing on both islands this morning, with gusts up to 80 mph. The situation was expected to improve by this afternoon.

Hazardous marine conditions – especially deadly surf and coastal inundation – remain significant threats.

Typhoon Condition 1 has been lifted for Rota, as damaging winds are no longer expected.

But residents should be ready for strong gusty winds and heavy rain showers.
