Six U.S. military services have released a draft environmental impact statement examining ongoing training and testing activities in the Mariana Islands.
The Department of the Navy, along with the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, is assessing the environmental effects of military readiness activities conducted at sea and on Farallon de Medinilla. These activities support national defense missions and include training, testing, and range modernization.
According to the draft study, proposed activities are similar to those conducted in the region for decades, but include updates to the type, frequency, and location of exercises. Activities may involve the use of active sonar, explosives, and other sound‑producing equipment, with measures planned to avoid or reduce environmental impacts.
As part of the public review process, two in‑person meetings will be held. One is scheduled for March 18 at the Dededo Senior Center on Guam, and the other on March 19 at the Crowne Plaza Resort in Garapan. Interpreters will be available, and public comments may be given orally or in writing.
The public comment period runs through May 1. The draft document is available online and at public libraries across Guam and the CNMI. More information can be found at www.nepa.navy.mil/mitteis.
