The 39th Annual Attorney General’s Cup speech competition will take place at 9 a.m. May 1 at the Guma’ Hustisia Supreme Court courtroom, the Office of the Attorney General announced.
Attorney General Edward Manibusan said the long-running event continues to serve as an important civic event in the Commonwealth.
“The Attorney General's Cup speech competition has a long tradition of encouraging our youth to think critically about important legal and civic issues,” he said in a statement. “This event gives students a meaningful platform to express their ideas and engage with issues that impact our community.”
Held each year as part of the CNMI’s Law Day activities, the competition draws student speakers from public and private high schools across the islands.
This year’s topic has not yet been released.
In 2025, students examined the issue of birthright citizenship, a topic that prompted wide-ranging discussions on constitutional interpretation, federal policy, and the CNMI’s unique political status.
According to the Office of the Attorney General, the Steering Committee has already begun preparations for the 2026 event, including coordinating logistics, reviewing competition guidelines, and conducting outreach to schools to encourage participation.
Manibusan invited the public to attend and support the student speakers. Additional details, including the announcement of this year’s topic, will be provided at a later date.
