The Consular Office of Japan on Saipan hosted a reception Thursday at the Grandvrio Resort’s Fiesta Hall to celebrate Emperor Naruhito’s upcoming 66th birthday on Feb. 23.
Consul Yoshiyuki Tomi thanked guests and highlighted the long‑standing ties between Japan and the CNMI, noting shared history, cultural connections and generations of cooperation. He acknowledged the region’s tragic past but said the relationship has continued to strengthen.
Tomi also recognized the legacy of Haruji “Sugar King” Matsue, whose work helped modernize the islands’ economy during the Japanese administration. Matsue’s 150th birth anniversary was commemorated last month, with his grandson visiting Saipan for events hosted by the NMI Museum of History and Culture and the consulate.
Tomi said he aims to deepen people‑to‑people exchanges and provide responsive consular services. Tomi, who arrived in December, has served in Tokyo, Seoul, Jeju, Vancouver and most recently Morocco.
Guests were served Japanese, Western and local dishes, along with sake and plum wine. Saipan’s sister city, Katori City in Chiba Prefecture, contributed local specialties such as dried sweet potato and hand towels.
Lt. Gov. Dennis Mendiola led a toast, emphasizing shared history and mutual respect. Gov. David Apatang also expressed appreciation for Japan‑CNMI ties, noting the many Japanese visitors who consider Saipan a second home.
