The Department of Agriculture’s Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources (DAWR) is advising the public to remain alert for the presence of box jellyfish in Guam’s coastal waters and along shorelines.

Box jellyfish are anticipated to be present on the following dates:

  • February 9-11
  • March 11-13
  • April 10-12
  • May 10-12

“Box jellyfish show up in relation to the moon’s phases, usually 8, 9, or 10 days after the full moon,” said DAWR Fisheries Biologist, Brent Tibbatts. “They can show up around any of the beaches around Guam, generally in shallow waters. The box jellyfish around Guam are not deadly, but they can give a painful sting.”

According to DAWR, box jellyfish may be found swimming near shore or washed up on beaches, particularly reef flats. The department notes that box jellyfish can still sting even after being washed ashore and no longer alive.

Beachgoers, swimmers, and fishermen are urged to exercise caution during these periods.

Members of the public who observe box jellyfish are encouraged to report sightings to the Department of Agriculture by calling (671) 735-0289, 735-0294, or 735-3982, or by emailing brent.tibbatts@doag.guam.gov .
