A 58-year-old mariner survived a vessel capsizing west of Guam on Jan. 12, 2026, thanks to his use of multiple communication devices, staying with the vessel, and informing others of his plans, which enabled a rapid U.S. Coast Guard response.

The Coast Guard rescued a 58-year-old mariner Monday whose boat overturned after he left Malesso’ at 5 a.m.

The 22-foot white pleasure boat Solo 2 went for a fishing trip near the Hagat buoy, and the boater planned to head to the 9-mile mark. Adverse sea conditions caused the vessel to overturn.

A high surf advisory and rip current statement are in effect in Guam waters.

The Coast Guard said the man was rescued because he used multiple communication devices, stayed with the vessel and informed others of his plans, which allowed the Coast Guard to find him rapidly.

The man activated his personal locator beacon and sent a message via his GPS device. Watchstanders got an alert from the beacon at 10:22 a.m., and a rescue boat arrived on the scene at 11:09 a.m.

The man had no medical conditions and was met by family members at the Hagat Marina.
