Philippine Airlines will resume twice‑weekly flights between Manila and Saipan on March 29, restoring a route that CNMI tourism officials say is vital for improving access and supporting the Commonwealth’s recovery.
Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Jamika Taijeron said the CNMI worked closely with PAL to ensure the service would be sustainable, especially given the islands’ smaller post‑pandemic economy and population.
“We wanted to make sure that the flight will be successful,” she said. “We had Philippine Airlines back in 2017, so with a smaller economy right now and smaller population, we wanted to make sure the flights would be successful.”
Taijeron said the CNMI is targeting Filipino travelers who already hold U.S. visas, noting that many are seeking destinations “a little off the beaten path” with the lifestyle the Marianas offer. She added that the flights will also benefit residents needing more travel options.
The new service is expected to improve access for Chinese visitors as well. “Hong Kong Airlines currently only serves twice a week, so access is not easily available,” she said. “Having an additional two times a week from PAL will increase the access for Chinese travelers, but also for everybody.”
