Former Gov. Ralph DLG Torres on Friday announced his bid to return to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands’ top office in the 2026 election, seeking the Republican Party nomination.
In a letter to party leaders, Torres said his decision came after “deep reflection” and support from family, community members, and business leaders. He cited the CNMI’s economic downturn, threats to government health insurance, and pension cuts as reasons for his candidacy.
“I know what must be done to restore our economy,” Torres said, pledging to revive tourism, restore airline services, and strengthen ties with Washington.
Torres, who served as governor from 2015 to 2023, was impeached by the House in 2022 but acquitted by the Senate. His announcement follows that of former running mate Vinnie Sablan, who declared his own GOP candidacy last month.
The Republican Party is expected to weigh both requests for nomination ahead of the Nov. 3, 2026, general election.
