King-Hinds urges Trump to back CNMI air service

Del. Kimberlyn King-Hinds has asked President Donald Trump to ensure the Commonwealth is included in new investment commitments from Japan and South Korea, specifically by channeling support toward restoring air service and revitalizing the islands’ struggling economy.

In a Dec. 4 letter to the White House, King-Hinds praised Trump’s recent agreements with Tokyo and Seoul, calling them “commendable” and reflective of renewed confidence in U.S. economic leadership.

She said the CNMI, as the closest American community to both countries, has long relied on their visitors and investments to sustain tourism, local businesses, and public services.

“Since COVID-19, however, the foundation of our economy has been severely weakened,” King-Hinds wrote, noting that suspended routes, a strong U.S. dollar, and reduced travel demand have eroded revenues and forced business closures. “What is needed is advocacy to ensure the CNMI is visible within these investment conversations and that partners understand the immediate, measurable impact their investments would have in the Marianas.”

King-Hinds urged Trump to encourage Japanese and Korean partners to use their U.S. investment incentives to reestablish direct routes to Saipan, Rota, and Tinian. She pointed to similar models in the region where allied investment has sustained essential but commercially challenging air service.

Her office, she said, is prepared to work with the National Economic Council, the U.S. Trade Representative, the Commerce Department, and the Treasury to advance the proposal.

“The Northern Mariana Islands stand ready to contribute to your vision of economic strength and partnership with our allies in the Indo-Pacific,” King-Hinds concluded.
