Community organizations are hosting the annual Walk for Water 2025 on Saturday at Litekyan, also known as the Ritidian National Wildlife Refuge.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and aims to bring attention to growing concerns over water contamination and the protection of Guam’s Northern Lens Aquifer, the island’s sole-source drinking water supply.
The walk will take participants along a 1-mile route led by cultural practitioners, environmental advocates, and community leaders.
An alternate 0.25-mile path will be available for those who need a shorter option. Organizers say the gathering serves as both a community call to action and an opportunity to highlight documented contaminants affecting Guam’s environment.
Cami Diaz Egurrola, representative of the Micronesia Climate Change Alliance, says pollutants identified across military sites continue to pose long-term risks to island residents.
“From contaminants like PFAS, Dieldrin, Agent Orange residue, and many other contaminants,” she said. “These substances function as what we call persistent pollutants. These risks reach every household and every family.”
The event program includes cultural activities, educational demonstrations, and opportunities to learn about ongoing efforts to protect the aquifer and surrounding lands.
Accessibility seating and shaded rest areas will be available for manåmko’ and other participants needing accommodations.
Walk for Water 2025 is organized by Hita Litekyan, the Micronesia Climate Change Alliance, Fanohge Coalition, Independent Guåhan, Gi Matan Guma’, Pulan Speaks, and Maga’låhen Hurao CHamoru Academy Charter School.
