The University of Guam’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Manny Crisostomo for a free public lecture, “The Long View: Decades of Visual Storytelling,” at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 17 in the CLASS Lecture Hall.
Crisostomo, Guam’s first and only Pulitzer Prize-winner, will share nearly 50 years of photographs and stories that blend hard-hitting photojournalism with artistic practice and cultural documentation. His career spans award-winning newspaper series, documentary projects, books such as Legacy of Guam: I Kustumbren Chamoru and Guam From the Heavens, the founding of Latte Magazine, and long-form work documenting CHamoru communities across the Marianas and throughout the diaspora.
In 1989, Crisostomo received the Pulitzer Prize for his Detroit Free Press series, “A Class Act, The Life and Times of Southwestern High School,” which chronicled the challenges facing teenagers in a racially diverse urban community. He has also been recognized with the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and other honors for his work documenting marginalized communities, including Pacific Islanders and refugee populations.
The event is part of UOG CLASS’s ongoing commitment to the humanities and to showcasing creative professionals whose work deepens understanding of island life and culture. The lecture is free and open to students, faculty, and the general public.
