Retired Army Col. Karin Watson testifies during her confirmation hearing as the adjutant general of the Guam National Guard on Dec. 3, 2025.

Former classmates, friends and military colleagues testified Wednesday in support of retired Army Col. Karin Watson’s nomination as adjutant general of the Guam National Guard and director of the Department of Military Affairs.

Sen. Shawn Gumataotao, who chaired the confirmation hearing, said 34 people had submitted testimony on the appointment, all in support of Watson’s confirmation.

Watson was sworn in last month following the abrupt resignation of former Adjutant General Brig. Gen. Michael Cruz.

Sen. Chris Barnett asked Watson if there was a transition period between her and Cruz.

“No, there was not,” Watson said. “I made attempts to communicate with General Cruz, and it did not happen. That was specifically the intent for the governor, was for us to have the transition.”

Watson, who was born in the Philippines and grew up on Guam, is a graduate of John F. Kennedy High School and the University of Guam.

She received her Army commission through the university’s ROTC program in 1998.
