The University of Guam Press has released Tinanom Åmot Siha: Plants Used in Traditional CHamoru Healing, a comprehensive educational resource authored by traditional healer Lourdes “Mama Lou” Toves Manglona.

The book documents more than 70 plants that yo’åmte, or CHamoru healers, use in their practice, continuing a tradition of knowledge passed down across generations in the Mariana Islands.

Manglona says the information in the book reflects teachings shared by elders.

“Because this is very important, it’s our culture. This medicine. I learn it from my grandmother. Now that I’m teaching, I want to make sure people will understand about the plant, how to use it,” she said.

The guide includes plant descriptions, cultural context, traditional applications and a glossary of terms. It also offers space for readers to take notes as they learn. The book is designed as an introductory educational tool and will be used in Manglona’s UOG course “Traditional Healing Practices on Guam.”

Manglona emphasizes that the text is not meant to replace trained instruction from a yo’åmte and does not include detailed recipes for preparing åmot.

Some plants can be harmful if used incorrectly, and she advises readers to consult knowledgeable practitioners when working with medical plants.

Tinanom Åmot Siha is available for purchase at uogpress.com and at local bookstores.
