James W. Feger, a longtime physical education teacher at Marianas High School, was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement in the Humanities award at this year’s Governor’s Humanities Awards.

Feger is credited with inventing rocball in the late 1970s—a fast-paced sport inspired by volleyball and rooted in ancient Aztec traditions. Rocball blends elements of volleyball and basketball, celebrating both athleticism and cultural heritage.

The Northern Marianas Humanities Council stated, “Through rocball, Feger helped redefine how sport connects people to history, identity and community. His legacy continues to shape what it means to be part of Team Marianas—where competition meets culture and the human spirit shines”

Gov. David Apatang praised all honorees for their dedication to preserving the stories and traditions of the Northern Marianas, saying their contributions strengthen the community.

Other awardees included Riya Nathrani, Peter Perez, Thomas Manglona II, and Marianas High School’s POLKSAI Guma Chamorro Club.
