The Guam Boonie Stompers group is inviting the community and members of the 38th Guam Legislature to join a guided hike to Fadi’an Cove at 9 a.m. Saturday.
The Boonie Stompers want to raise awareness about the area’s cultural, environmental, and community value.
The hike comes after senators passed Bill No. 7-38 on Oct. 3. The measure authorizes the Chamorro Land Trust Commission to solicit competitive bids for the mass grading and mineral extraction of a portion of the Mangilao lot.
The bill is now at the governor’s office. She can either sign it, allow it to lapse into law, or veto it. If she vetoes the measure, it will go back to the legislature for a possible override vote.
The Boonie Stompers, a non-profit hiking group, opposes using the bill, and organizers say Saturday’s hike will give people a look at what could be lost if it becomes law.
According to the Boonie Stompers, Fadi’an Cove is home to local families and serves as a site for recreation, subsistence hunting, and traditional living. The group says the hike is an opportunity for residents and lawmakers to see the landscape firsthand and understand the potential impacts of the proposed development.
The Boonie Stompers will meet any willing participants on the outside of the GWA/GPA gate on Saturday at 9 a.m.
