The Guam Board of Education will begin screening seven applicants for the superintendent position on Sept. 29, 2025.

The Guam Board of Education has received seven applications for the position of superintendent, and will begin screening the applicants at 1 p.m. Monday.

In a Tuesday Board of Education meeting, search committee chairperson Maria A. Gutierrez said the candidates’ applications will be reviewed to make sure all qualifications are met and required documents are included.

Board Chairperson Angel Sablan said the names of candidates who meet requirements will be released to the public when screening is completed. The others will be notified that they did not meet the qualifications.

A press conference will be held at noon Oct. 13 “to present all the candidates that have qualified for the position,” Sablan said. “At this time the media will be allowed to ask two questions to each, whoever the applicants are, and the applicants can respond.”

While the public will not be allowed to participate in the question and answer session, Sablan said the press conference will give the community a chance to meet the candidates.

Sablan said the board might be able to make a selection as early as Oct. 21.

“And just to be very clear, there is no current board member that is an applicant for superintendent,” Sablan said.

The new superintendent will replace Kenneth Erik Swanson, whose last day is Dec. 31. Swanson became superintendent in 2023.
