Tropical cyclone alert issued; heavy rain, winds expected for Palau, Yap

A tropical cyclone formation alert was issued for Invest 92W on Sept. 23, 2025.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center has issued a tropical cyclone formation alert for Invest 92W, a disturbance near Yap that is likely to be upgraded to a tropical depression by Wednesday afternoon.

The system will bring high winds and heavy rain to Palau and Yap.

Meanwhile, a swell generated by a typhoon southeast of Japan is expected to bring potentially hazardous surf to the Marianas.

On Tuesday, National Weather Service forecasters said residents in Yap and Palau can expect “periods of showers, thunderstorms, locally heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds the next couple of days.”

Wind gusts reaching up to 35 mph are likely near heavier, surging showers.

Peak winds are expected Wednesday.

While 92W is brewing in western Micronesia, a typhoon near Japan is expected to bring a large north swell through the region over the next few days, according to forecasters.

Typhoon Neoguri has been swirling southeast of Japan and is likely to stay in place for one to three days before being pushed to the north.

The storm is generating a “large north swell” that will head to the Marianas and the Federated States of Micronesia, creating possibly hazardous surf, especially on north-facing reefs.
