The Department of Defense(DOD) has extended the public comment period for a draft environmental impact statement on its proposed military expansion on Tinian.

The deadline for feedback on the CNMI Joint Military Training plans has been moved from Aug. 20 to Sept. 4, the department announced.

CNMI Gov. David Apatang requested the extension to give the local community more time to review and respond to the plans, which include live-fire ranges, a base camp, communications infrastructure and a biosecurity facility. The statement assesses the potential effects on the environment and historical sites.

Apatang has also requested that .50-caliber ammunition be removed from the training plans to reduce the surface danger zone and that fishing aggregate devices be installed to lessen the impact on local fishermen.
