The underwater observatory at Fish Eye Marine Park in Piti is scheduled to undergo a major refurbishment in the coming weeks, the company announced.
The observatory’s eight viewing windows will be replaced beginning Sept. 1, with the project expected to be completed by Sept. 14.
The window replacement will improve the visibility for guests and provide better viewing of the abundant sea life around the observatory.
“The observatory has always been the heart of Fish Eye,” said Fish Eye Marine Park General Manager Akihiro Tani. “As we approach our 30th year, we want to ensure the experience remains just as magical as it was for our very first guests. This project is our way of honoring the past while investing in the future.”
The park opened in 1996, and will celebrate its 30th anniversary next year.
Company officials said the window replacement was originally supposed to take place in early 2020, but it was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Replacing underwater glass at this scale takes precision, planning and care,” said Project Manager Frank Benevente. “Each panel is custom fit and must be sealed to withstand underwater pressure all while ensuring minimal disruption to the marine ecosystem surrounding the observatory.”
In addition to the observatory, Fish Eye Marine Park features an island cultural dinner show, snorkeling tours, dolphin and sunset cruises, and the Island Heritage & Coconut Experience.
