The USS George Washington Strike Group arrived on Guam for a scheduled port visit Sunday.
A Navy statement said the visit would provide the crew time to tour the island, get some rest and relaxation, resupply and participate in various community service events.
The strike group includes the aircraft carrier USS George Washington, Carrier Air Wing 5, and Destroyer Squadron 15.
“The George Washington Strike Group’s arrival in Guam emphasizes the key role that Guam plays in the Western Pacific,” Capt. Tim Waits, commanding officer of George Washington, said in the Navy statement. “Our visit also provides a great opportunity for our sailors to engage in the local community and provides an opportunity for some brief but well-deserved liberty.”
The strike group left Yokosuka, Japan, June 10.
