I Hinanao, I magahet, Yan I Innina, or HMI, is concluding its 4th annual Veterans Symposium on Aug. 15, after a three-day push at the University of Guam Lecture Hall. HMI comes together to help veterans and their families understand and access the benefits they’ve earned.
The free event brings together veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard, Reserve, and family members for sessions on VA healthcare and benefits, local and federal veteran programs, employment and education opportunities, and health and wellness resources. Mornings feature on-site resource partners, followed by lunch and HMI’s hands-on Benefits Boot Camp starting at 1 p.m. each day.
HMI’s Vice President Corina Ballesta said the goal is to demystify the VA claims process and make sure veterans leave knowing their next steps.
“Not a lot of veterans know there are so many benefits available to them. So we’re there doing outreaches everywhere. It’s life-changing when veterans get their benefits.” Ballesta emphasized the motivation behind HMI’s outreach, “This is yours. You raised your right hand. These are your benefits.”
Across the three days, instructors walked participants through:
Day 1: The laws and basics that govern VA claims.
Day 2: Hands-on exercises, medical evidence, and required forms.
Day 3: What to expect after filing and how to navigate the next steps.
While the symposium is the only time HMI runs its boot camp during the day, the nonprofit hosts monthly evening “Benefit Boot Camps” in mayor’s offices around the island, typically 5:30-8:30/9 p.m. The next session is scheduled for Sept. 9-11 at the Piti Mayor’s, according to Ballesta.
